About the Project
These Autobiographical Comics were created with the three 5th grade classes at Ray Elementary School in the spring of 2012 as part of a year-long Pathways Program, an outreach partnership with the Hyde Park Art Center. Teaching artist Meredith Eastburn met with each class once a week for 30 weeks over the school-year and worked on a variety of art projects including Six-Word Self-Portrait Books, Collage Pop-Up Accordion Books, Personal Symbol Mandalas, Artist Trading Cards, Autobiographical Comics, and Haiku Zines. For the comics unit, students looked at and discussed the work of comic artists Heather McAdams and Lynda Barry. UIC's Spiral Art Education curriculum on Autobiographical Comics served as an inspiration and resource.
